Holy Week - Part Three

Following an exact timeline of the Holy Week is nearly impossible, and, thus, unrequired. The traditional outline of His week does not include any known activities on Wednesday. However, I am not going to give you the day off, especially since we have no services this evening. I ask you to read Matthew's account. Go back to Matthew 21 and re-read about the entry that we spoke of on Sunday, and read through chapter twenty-five. Matthew records in chapter 26 the anointing at Bethany, which very likely happened on Monday, not right before he gave us the Passover Meal with Jesus' disciples on Thursday. There are some profound statements given by our Lord that you need to be familiar with regardless of when He made them.

Matthew's audience were Jews. He seeks to give them a portrait of Jesus as King and Messiah they sought for and longed for. The key word in His Gospel is fulfilled. The recorded teachings of Jesus here are not found elsewhere. His writing moves from narrative to Discourse throughout. He uses this style to affirm God's program through His Son, Jesus.

You'll find the suggested reading to be some narrative, but mostly Discourse. Jesus teaching and profound insights should have proved to a Jewish audience that He was who He claimed to be. These things should affirm that same truth in us as well. May our Lord infuse us with blessing, hope, and encouragement as we listen to Him, walk with Him, and watch Him make His way to His cross He willingly bore for us.

In Christ,
Pastor Todd
